Giving to the Needy

6 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them.^(A) If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

²“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. ³But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, ⁴so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.^(B)

Prayer^(C)

⁵“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing^(D) in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. ⁶But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father,^(E) who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. ⁷And when you pray, do not keep on babbling^(F) like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.^(G) ⁸Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need^(H) before you ask him.

⁹“This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father^(I) in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
¹⁰your kingdom^(J) come,
your will be done,^(K)
    on earth as it is in heaven.
¹¹Give us today our daily bread.^(L)
¹²And forgive us our debts,
    as we also have forgiven our debtors.^(M)
¹³And lead us not into temptation,^[a]^(N)
    but deliver us from the evil one.^[b]’^(O)

¹⁴For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.^(P) ¹⁵But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.^(Q)

Fasting

¹⁶“When you fast,^(R) do not look somber^(S) as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. ¹⁷But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, ¹⁸so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.^(T)

To the Church in Thyatira

¹⁸“To the angel of the church in Thyatira^(A) write:

These are the words of the Son of God,^(B) whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze.^(C) ¹⁹I know your deeds,^(D) your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first.

²⁰Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel,^(E) who calls herself a prophet. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols.^(F) ²¹I have given her time^(G) to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling.^(H) ²²So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery^(I) with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. ²³I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds,^(J) and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.^(K)

²⁴Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets, ‘I will not impose any other burden on you,^(L) ²⁵except to hold on to what you have^(M) until I come.’^(N)

²⁶To the one who is victorious^(O) and does my will to the end,^(P) I will give authority over the nations^(Q)— ²⁷that one ‘will rule them with an iron scepter^(R) and will dash them to pieces like pottery’^[a]^(S)—just as I have received authority from my Father. ²⁸I will also give that one the morning star.^(T) ²⁹Whoever has ears, let them hear^(U) what the Spirit says to the churches.

To the Church in Sardis

3 “To the angel^[b] of the church in Sardis^(V) write:

These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits^[c]^(W) of God and the seven stars.^(X) I know your deeds;^(Y) you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.^(Z) ²Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God. ³Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent.^(AA) But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief,^(AB) and you will not know at what time^(AC) I will come to you.

⁴Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes.^(AD) They will walk with me, dressed in white,^(AE) for they are worthy. ⁵The one who is victorious^(AF) will, like them, be dressed in white.^(AG) I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life,^(AH) but will acknowledge that name before my Father^(AI) and his angels. ⁶Whoever has ears, let them hear^(AJ) what the Spirit says to the churches.
